Help – my team isn’t working!?!
Here are three things you can do today to get better results from your team.
Find out what motivates your team members
Find out what motivates your people, and reward them for good work. Not everybody is motivated by the same things. Some might be motivated by money, some by time off, some by competition, others by recognition and praise.
Once you know what motivates your team, build systems that leverage your team’s unique motivators and reward your people for good work. The $5 gift card to Starbucks might be a great motivator for some, but another person might just want an atta boy and a long lunch on a Friday afternoon. Find out.
Listen – Listen – Listen
When you are at a loss for what to do for your team – stop doing and just listen.
Your team is a fantastic source of information. When your team believes you have their best interest in mind, they will tell you what they need. Sometimes leaders get caught up in trying to come up with the best solutions for their teams in isolation. You don’t have to be a hero, and you are not alone. Spend time with your team and give them opportunity to contribute ideas and discuss their needs.
They are the experts – listen to them.
Ask for and give help
One of the best ways to build cohesion and collaboration is to help each other. It sounds simple, and it is, but leaders can get caught up in building superstars instead of building teamwork.
If your team isn’t helping one another, you can begin by asking for help yourself. Show your team that you see their value, trust their work, and need their help. Encourage helping behaviors in your team members. The more a team helps one another with their tasks, the more they will trust each other and the better they will perform.
If you and your members aren’t regular asking for and giving help to each other – start today.
